As a helping professional, I know that it can be easy to get burned out. Constant stress and compassion fatigue are all too common in the helping professions. In focusing so much of our work on supporting others, we don’t always make time to take care of ourselves. But self-care is essential if we are to continue to help others and feel passionate about the work that we do.
As an art therapist, I know that I need to make time for my own creative expression. It’s not always easy to prioritize creative self-care, but when I do, I am always rewarded with renewed energy and a calm mind.
You don’t have to consider yourself an artist to find value in trying these art exercises. Give yourself permission to play, explore, and make mistakes. Therapeutic art encourages you to focus on the creative process, not the appearance of the final product.
